Agnes Scott College Peak Week 2016
Join professionals from Coca-Cola, Johnson & Johnson, Kraft Foods and other organizations to learn about the many areas of opportunities in Consumer Packaged Goods from finance to sales/marketing to operations. We will join 30 other college students from KSU and GA Tech for this Career Trek.
Students will learn the basics of electronics by creating circuits using the Arduino, an accessible and affordable microcontroller. Students will create basic circuits using sensor and switch input which control output such as light and sound. Students will then design and create projects on their own.
This class is great for artists, scientists, and anyone interested in learning more about technology. No experience in programming or electronics is assumed. Limited number of spaces available. NOTE: THIS SESSION IS A SERIES THROUGHOUT THE WEEK AND STUDENTS MUST ATTEND THEM IN ITS ENTIRETY. BE SURE TO SELECT THIS SESSION ON EACH DAY IF YOU PLAN ON ATTENDING THIS SESSION.

There is no other major city in the United States as forested at Atlanta. Join Trees Atlanta in their mission to keep this Atlanta tradition thriving with a tree planting in the metro-Atlanta area. Since the 1970s, Atlanta has lost 60% of its tree canopy making these tree initiatives vital to the health of our region.
A panel of local activists and non-profit professionals will discuss how the ways in which they navigate being active in social justice work while also securing their livelihoods. Students and panelists will discuss risks and benefits of engaging in civil disobedience and the diverse levels one can be involved activism.
Is Graduate School for Me? This 90-minute lunch 'n learn will provide students with an overview of life as a graduate student; what it takes to get into graduate school relative to undergraduate research, grades and other experiences, and general guidelines for the application process.
Want to be a better leader? Want to learn the magic behind Improv Comedy? Come out to this program to learn the basic fundamentals of Improvisation and how you can translate them to your leadership style as well as your work, school and personal life. You will leave with an understanding of how Improv Comedians make magic on stage together and how you can be a better leader as a result. Come laugh and learn with your fellow Scotties. A few lucky volunteers will get to perform Improv during this presentation!
An introductory workshop exploring potential career paths for young musicians. Topics covered will include:
- Identifying what you’re good at, what you’re passionate about, what the community needs, and where they can overlap to provide meaningful work
- Traditional career paths o Orchestra, operas, other established performing tracks o Teaching: college, studio, school
- Nontraditional career paths o Starting your own organization Mission statements, objectives, choosing a marketable path o Using case studies to explore musicians making a living via nontraditional career paths
At some point in their career, most musicians will teach private lessons. This workshop will provide a business plan and materials need to equip new teachers to start and run an effective business.

Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta Introduction to basic car maintenance; things you’ll want to know when your car starts to age. Pointers on car care that will extend the life of your auto, emergency kits, what to do if you are involved in an accident, how to change a tire and how to jump start a car. A team of you will walk thru an actual tire change. Limited space available.
This session is designed as a book discussion. Participants are expected to have read "My Stroke of Insight" by Jill Bolte Taylor, prior to attending. "Stroke of Insight" documents the journey of Taylor, a Harvard Neuroscientist, and her remarkable recovery from a life changing stroke. During the session, participants will learn the basic mechanisms and resultant neurological injuries caused by strokes, engage in a guided discussion, and learn the value of perseverance in the face of challenges.
Many musicians spot a need in the community and choose to start their own business, studio, organization, or event to meet this need. This workshop will explore potential avenues for a “start your own” mindset, beginning with a directed brainstorming session and moving into the logistical steps for getting started. Avenues examined will include:
- Events
- Concert series
- Ensembles (new music? specialized?)
- Music studios (teaching/recording)
- Other avenues determined in the brainstorming session
Living sustainably encompasses more than environmental stewardship, bringing together social, economic and environmental awareness. Join the Center for Sustainability for an interactive session on how you can incorporate sustainability into your daily life that goes beyond just recycling and conserving energy.
Women in Sports Career Panel - Join Atlanta Hawks executives for a discussion about opportunities for women to work in a variety of areas of Sport Management - sales, events, marketing, analytics, and more!
Please join us for the screening of 3 films about contact between alien peoples. These films are related to the “First Contact” course taught by Professors DePree and Falen, but no prior knowledge or preparation is needed to attend. Following each film, we will hold a discussion about the practical, ethical, and philosophical implications of encountering new peoples for the first time, both real-life examples and hypothetical science-fiction scenarios. Popcorn and refreshments will be served! In this adaptation of the Carl Sagan novel, Dr. Ellie Arroway (Jodie Foster) races to interpret a possible message originating from the Vega star system. In the scramble for first contact with an extraterrestrial intelligence, Arroway contends with a restrictive National Security Advisor and religious fanatics bent on containing the implications of such an event. An incredible message is found hidden in the signal, but will Arroway be the one to answer its call?
